Can Mindfulness help manage Pain and Mental Illness?

CNN Health

November 26, 2010

After a parachute jump injury two decades ago, US Army Ranger Monty Reed was introduced to Mindfulness at the V.A. Hospital in Seattle. “I felt like the pain I deal with every day is the enemy I had to fight,” says Reed, 45, Seattle.

“Mindfulness helped him deal with the pain and flashbacks.  Reed realized that in addition to his physical pain, his attitude towards his own irrational anger was making him more angry, and that anger further aggravated the pain.

Reed still has flashbacks and sometimes gets angry, but he says he’s better able to manage them now.”
